Failure of engine mounts of heavy duty vehicles pose a serious problem when they happen in the field, where neither mechanical service assistance nor garage facilities are available nearby. After a series of failures in in Landrover Defender 4x4 vehicles, the issue was studied and the cause of the failure was investigated and pinpointed to the engine mounts. As a result, the rubber composition in the mounts was changed to one with superior static and dynamic characteristics was designed. In the paper, the properties of the optimum compound are given, and the mounts which were produced with this compound tested in simulated procedures and in the field most successfully.
