Ever increasing sizes of large (>4,500 TEU) and ultra-large (<10,000 TEU) container vessels require more power generated mainly by slow-speed two-stroke diesel engines. Where is the power limit per single unit? 100 MW seems to be possible today. In a first project - huge container ships (>9,200 TEU) - will be equipped with 12K98MC-C engines. With 12 cylinders in line they reach a maximum output of 68,529 kW running at an engine speed of 104 r/min. The specific fuel oil consumption (SFOC) is 171 g/kWh. The dry mass weight reaches 2,075 t with dimensions of 24 m length, 4.50 m width and 12.50 m height. In a second project 4,250 TEU carrying vessels will be equipped with 8K98MC-C engines giving 45,680 kW maximum output at an engine speed of 104 r/min and 171 g/kWh SFOC. The weight is 1,470 t dry mass with 17.50 m length, 4.50 m width and 12.50 m height. All engines for these two projects are to be built in licence by Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding in Japan which have worked closely with MAN B&W Diesel since 1926. A historical MC milestone was reached by MAN B&W Diesel early in February 2005: They broke the 100,000 bhp limit. With an output of 101,645 bhp (74,760 kW) for a 12K98MC engine, with a record output of 8,470 bhp (6,230 kW) per cylinder, is by far the most powerful MAN B&W designed engine in production. Four 5,100 TEU large container vessels are contracted with MAN B&W Diesel 9K90MC-C main engines. Mid of March 2005, a 7S70ME-C engine has been selected for an ice-class bulker ordered by Canadian owner Fednav. The flexibility of the electronically controlled ME engine in the ice-class version will ensure optimal operational economy and performance in the wide span of operation modes, which is needed for this type of vessel including ice-ramming operation. The engine, with an output of 21,770 kW at 91 r/min, drives a CP propeller. The engine thrust bearing structure has been optimised in order to meet the requirements of the ice-breaker ice class Polar 15. The 7S70ME-C engine is to be built by MAN B&W Diesel licensee Hitachi Zosen of Japan. It will be delivered in September 2005 to Japanese shipyard Universal Shipbuilding, where the vessel is under construction for delivery in April 2006. For lower ice classes, where fixed pitch propellers are often chosen, the optimal solution today is an ME engine with a heavy running mode.
