Beside foamed moldings and decorative parts, energy absorbing components consisting of polyurethane are used in the bumpers and in the interior of automobiles. These polyurethane components are developed and produced by Thieme GmbH and Co. KG (Tenningen, Federal Republic of Germany) using energy absorbing foams consisting of Bayfill EA from Bayer Material Science (Leverkusen, Federal Republic of Germany). These PUR systems are not destroyed during impact, they only are comprised. After impact, the PUR system gets their original form. This is due to viscoelastic properties of the cellular structure. The physical and chemical properties of Bayfill can be varied in a wide range: material density between 40 and 300 kg/m3 and wall thicknesses between 2 and 150 mm.
