Different aspects for cheaper commercial supply of high-quality titanium powder are discussed. Many attempts to find less expensive routes to titanium PM in the shape of powders that could yield the desired properties when densified by conventional pressing and sintering are also reported. The use of calcium hydride reduction of TiO2, in order to avoid chloride contamination that results from the more traditional methods based on reduction of TiCl 4, is suggested. Secondary titanium powder has been made by a revesible hydride-dehydride (HDH) process in which titanium metal sponde, billet, scrap or machining chips is heated in hydrogen to form brittle titanium hydride, which is crushed and then reconverted to titanium metal powder.
