Forming of sheet metals at elevated temperature has some technical difficulties and unknowns, because of heating techniques and rapid heat transfer to the environment, which is a result of large surface-to-mass ratio of the workpiece. The aim of this study was to determine and improve die design alternatives and limits of warm/hot sheet forming process and to investigate its feasibility on selected HSLA sheet steels. A series of tension tests were performed at room and elevated temperature on selected grades of HSLA sheet steels and the improvements in forming behavior and change in final mechanical strength as a function of process temperature and strain rate were determined. Results of this investigation can be used as a guide to studies on sheet steels in the future. For higher accuracy, experiments at more temperature levels and on more strain rate levels are necessary. Instead of using standard sheet specimen geometry, using the geometry proposed by Li and Ghosh is more preferable to obtain more conclusive results. Forming sheet steels at elevated temperature is not very commonly used in the industry due to technical difficulties, cost restrictions and unknowns on the material and the process. However, the advantages of lightweight and high strength parts are tremendous. Thus, warm and hot sheet metal forming will be employed more and more in particularly the automotive industry in the future, as these unknowns are clarified gradually. Novel methods for rapid and more efficient heating of sheet steels must also investigated. Similar studies must be performed on higher strength steels as well.
