Nickel base alloy INCONEL 718 is predominantly used for high temperature applications, being highly resistant against oxidation and corrosion. Its application possibilities are in aircraft industry, gas turbines, components repair work, etc. In the present paper a substrate of 12% Cr-steel was coated with Inconel 718 by using the high velocity oxy-fuel HVOF-spraying process. Layers were prepared with the unique device HP/HVOF TAFA JP-500 and showed following favourable properties: low porosity (less 1 %), high hardness (40-70 HRC), low oxides content, high adhesion (more 70MPa), compression stresses in coating (strong layers up to 12mm). Existance of residual stresses in layer influences adhesion importantly. It is therefore necessary to choose suitable parameters to create coatings with compression stress. By help of Sysweld programme the residual stresses in HVOF thermal sprayings were calculated. Because of low memory capacity simplified a two-dimensional model was used for calculation. Calculated results are not in agreement with experimental ones. Improved three dimensional calculation model should be elaborated and applied.
