Companies have various alternatives for decommisioning platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. This series of five articles will discuss the regulatory aspects and main factors that influence severance selection, provide source material on the technologies that are frequently applied, and develop cost estimates for the cutting operations. This first part of the series discusses the business, technology, regulations, and costs of severance operations. Parts 2 and 3 will discuss abrasive cutting technology and a model for estimating costs, while the remaining two parts will discuss the technology, regulatory aspects, and costs of explosive severance.
