It is incontestable that the future of automotive engineering belongs to electronization. Equally certain is the fact that the reliability of electronic components will be the central quality issue across the industry. Even today, around half of all breakdowns can be positively traced to electronic failure. All automotive manufacturers are battling with electronic problems, even the quality-conscious Japanese. How can the weaknesses in electronics development be eliminated, systematically and sustainably? McKinsey has identified eight optimization levers, derived from a wide range of experience and a comprehensive intranet survey with experts from OEMs and suppliers. These eight levers should be addressed successively and, where necessary, with the appropriate depth of focus to rethink the electronics performance of OEMs and suppliers. These eight levers are outlined in the paper: 1. Lever of strategic market management, 2. Lever of customer-oriented innovation management, 3. Lever of modular electronics architecture, 4. Lever of mature development processes, 5. Lever of testing and integration, 6. Lever of OEM - supplier relationship, 7. Lever of quality management in servicing, 8. Lever of knowledge-based development organization.
