Car manufacturers investigate many different ways, to reduce exhaust emissions. Hybrid power trains, i.e. combining different kind of mechanical power generation sources are part of these approaches. Among all the possible hybrid power trains, the power-split architecture is one of the most interesting, as it allows almost all the features expected from a Hybrid transmission, combining both consumption-emissions reduction with driveability. A major advantage of power-split architectures stands in the possibility to de-couple ICE and wheels speed as long as the output power demand is met: This gives much more flexibility to choose the ICE working point in order to optimise fuel consumption and reduce exhaust emissions. Renault launched in 1999 a study of the power-split architecture and is now running a test programme on vehicles in order to assess in vivo the potential of such transmissions. For this purpose, Renault designed a transmission that could be used first as a pure transmission (no energy storage) and then as a 'mild-hybrid' transmission (enabling stop & start and brake & boost features). The author first describes the power-split architecture. The dual mode transmission is outlined. The following possible constraints/optimisation are discussed: 1. effect of the efficiency at zero speed, 2. torque demand on the vehicle, 3. electric machines limitations, effect on the performance, 4. fuel consumption optimisation. The new control strategy is described: 1.the EDI (extended driver interpretation), 2. the OOP (optimisation of operating point), 3. the COS (coordinating strategy), 4. the management of the mode change, 5. the PCO (piloting components).
