The main purpose of the research work reported here has been to study the suitability of different electric motor types as a traction motor in a heavy working vehicle, such as a load haul truck. The torque vs. speed varies heavily in these applications - a ratio 10:1 between the start torque and the maximum speed torque is typical. The induction motor was found to be the most suitable motor type for the traction motor of a heavy working machine due to its high pull-out torque, high over-loading capability, ruggedness, lack of maintenance and relatively low price. A pull-out-optimised induction motor was designed, different design parameter effects were computed and the motors suitability for the electric vehicle was analysed. The computer simulations were carried out using finite element method (FEM).
