By investigating technical information gathered at the Society of Automotive Engineers, the author tried to figure out the necessary and sufficient conditions that will support the Japanese automotive industry by NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) technology in the near future. Such trends as environment protection, international business competition, aging population and emerging technologies are included. NVH performances of electric vehicles (EV), hybrid vehicles (HEV) are analyzed in various driving conditions. With regard to recent revolutions in power sources, the author emphasizes that the NVH technology will keep playing an important role in both technologically and business competition even when HEVs and EVs dominate on the roads. From the word 'the near future' in this article's title, readers may have expected a more concrete and clear vision. The author fears that readers may be disappointed with the content. However, the future cannot be figured out by simply extrapolating from today's operation. Imagination was necessary to write this article, and imagination has brought ambiguity.
