Low-level automation of coking production has resulted in low efficiency in coking production, high production costs and big difficulties in maintaining safe production in Chinese coking plants. To deal with this condition, an automation system for four big coke oven locomotives has been developed jointly with Shougang Coking Plant and China Association of Coking Industry. Successful application of infrared transmission in the automation systems for the four locomotives of coke oven battery of Shougang Coking Plant has solved technical difficulties in position detecting. This system adopts advanced computer system, controlling software technology and other advanced technologies, which results in successful realization of automatic positioning of the four locomotives of coke oven battery, interlock of three locomotives, automatic traveling of the locomotives. Implementation of the automation systems for the four locomotives of coke ovens resulted in reduction of different types of accidents caused by operator's confirmation and operator's link. Comparison between results before and after implementation of the automation systems shows a cost reduction of 590000 Yuan in repairing, maintenance and consumption of spare parts. Implementation of the automation systems strengthens control of coke oven machines and coke pushing current, making it possible to discover and solve problems, and consequently extending service life of the coke oven body. No 1 coke oven battery can produce 0.487 million tons of coke a year, resulting in annual benefits of 200 million Yuan. This system improves the automation of coke ovens, and as a result, number of operators is reduced. Again Shougang's No 1 coke oven battery is taken as an example, 0.33 million Yuan was reduced in manpower cost in a year. The new automation system is in a leading position in this industry in China. Application of this system can promote automatic production management in China's coking industry, improve coke quality and result in excellent social land economic benefits.
