Continuing a process started on high-speed truck and yacht engines, MAN B&W Diesel recently presented its first medium-speed diesel with common rail fuel injection technology. The common rail system consists of a series of segmented pressure accumulators, located opposite the engine cylinders they serve. Fuel is pressurized by high-pressure pumps in the bore vacated by conventional pumps. Control valves are located on the segment ends, not the injectors. As such, the system lends itself to retrofit applications. Beside optimized fuel consumption and emissions, the flexibility common rail gives in determining quantity, timing and duration of fuel injection opens new horizons for adapting torque and power to engine load. By close attention to programming of the microprocessor engine controller full benefit from the common rail system is gained. Service staff and ship-owners are able to access the engine controller and its data via satellite or links to adjust operating parameters, monitor engine performance, diagnose problems, and download operating data for evaluation.
