During the last years important progress in starter-alternator technologies has been achieved. Belt driven (SSG) or integrated Starter-Generator (ISG) have been proposed, developed for serial production and tested in vehicles. Their naming is derived from the two main functions, which are designed into one only component. Particularly when integrating the Starter-Generator between combustion engine and gearbox, innovative control strategies even for the powertrain will be feasible. The Integrated Starter-Generator (ISG) is able to supply electrical energy at high system efficiency and power of up to 10kW for voltages below 60V. Depending on application and the size of the electric motor, a Starter-Generator offers very interesting functional options. The presented concept of power trading provides optimised control over the drivetrain, the electrical power supply and temperatures by managing via CAN-bus the sophisticated interaction between the vehicle's main control units for engine, body and climate in a standardised way. The power-trader is a flexible and precious tool to achieve reduced emissions and fuel consumption with improved drivability and comfort with even increasing reliability. The development efforts for power trading and dual energy supply will lead to a completely new energy supply system in vehicles with or without Integrated Starter Generators. Although further improvements are necessary, the concepts described here will have an enormous positive influence on the introduction of new functions and Starter-Generator technology in future vehicles.
