Improvements in jet engine technology are evaluated by the technological items as fuel consumption rate, thrust to weight ratio, noise, toxic exhaust gas and safety. These performances were achieved mainly by the light-weight technology and by the adaptation technology to the high temperature and pressure environment. In this paper, the technological progress is regarded with view on progress of welding, joining and coating technology in a japanese company (IHI). In order to realize the light-weight design, high quality welding technologies as electron beam welding were applied to the drum structure of jet engine components, laser welding is used to produce to titanium fan case circumferential joint and to the Hastelloy combustor joint. Besides friction processing as a solid phase joining method, inertia bonding was developed to achieve high accuracy axis symmetric components, such as shafts. With use of diffusion bonding and brazing technology a hollow core structure to reduce the weight was established. The adaption technology to high temperature and pressure environment is specified with examples of production and application of thermal barrier coatings (TBC) with plasma spraying. Diffusion coating method which generate a high anti-corrosion layer in high temperature by diffusing aluminum into the surface of Ni base alloy were developed. In case of worn parts (blade, vane) powder cladding technology using TIG or micro plasma machine is replacing to laser build-up technology. The advantage of this technology is to minimize the heat affected zone, reduce the welding distortion and lower costs. For the repair of failed parts in blisk, linear friction welding tries to apply, and this process has already applied to the newly welded blisk in European aircraft engine industry. Brazing technology has applied to the crack repair of vane and powder metallurgical process is under development in order to apply to the high creep resistance parts such as high pressure nozzle. Micro spark coating, which has invented by IHI and Mitsubishi was applied not only to the repair but also to the virgin parts. Efforts are being made to apply this process to a wider range of industrial areas as well as jet engine components.
