The measurement of solids concentration of particles in slurry pipelines can be broadly divided into two categories of those that measure the delivered solids concentration, and those that provide information on local measurements. The first category provides information about the amount of material entering or leaving the system, which is important in determining solids flow rates. Many devices and instrumentation have been proposed for the measurement of slurry density, and for the monitoring of delivered and in-situ solids concentrations. Devices such as gravimetric density gauges, radiometric attenuation, counter balances, resonant frequency and venturi meters, along with the newer techniques of particle image velocimetry, laser Doppler anemometry and positron emission tracking, have been used at one time or another, with varying degrees of success. Each of these instruments have there own merits and range of applications, and as a result find some limited uses. In this paper, it is proposed that electrical resistance tomography can be used to measure slurry density profiles in horizontal pipes. Slurry density measurements determined by this technique at various particle sizes, solids concentrations and transport velocities are reported, and compared to pre-determined densities using other technologies. From direct conversion of the electrical resistance tomography local conductivity values to solids concentration, results in an under prediction of slurry density when compared to a calibrated technique. When a correction factor determined from actual probe measurements was applied to the electrical resistance tomography predicted solids concentration, the under prediction was reduced. More work is required in relating the correction factor to the substance used and its particle size distribution, before confidence can be fully gained in this technique.
