This paper introduces the study accomplished in collaboration with The Shipbuilding Research Association of Japan under the subsidy of The Nippon Foundation, carrying out continuous on-board NO(x) monitoring using bunker fuel oil. Nowadays, at most Japanese engine builders, NO(x) emissions from newly built marine engines are measured during the shop tests on the bench using marine diesel oil (MDO). However, the availability of such data from on-board operation using bunker fuel oil (BFO) is still extremely limited. During 2001 to 2002, a working group under The Shipbuilding Research Association of Japan carried out continuous on-board NO(x) monitoring on a selected few vessels. At the same time the authors have developed a new test rig, a constant volume combustion chamber to measure NO(x) emissions from bunker fuel combustion and to examine the effect of nitrogen in the fuel on fuel NO(x). This paper presents the results obtained by abovementioned groups. Major results so far are as follows: 1. NO(x) monitoring using a newly developed zirconia NO(x) analyzing system was successfully carried out on board a VLCC and a container carrier. 2. On-board NO(x) data at around the normal continuous rating distributed in the range of +10 % to +15 % of the shop tests results in case of the VLCC and +5 % to +20 % in case of the container carrier. 3. At the same time sampled fuels were sent to the constant volume combustion chamber and NO(x) was measured under a common condition for all samples. As a result, the conversion rate from nitrogen in the fuel to the fuel NO(x) could be estimated at about 55 %. 4. As a further research work, running tests applying a single cylinder 2-stroke test engine (400 mm bore) is being carried out in 2003 to compare the NO(x) emission between using MDO and BFO. This test result is disclosed. 5. Not only above-mentioned work to measure NO(x) emission but also research work to reduce NO(x) from bunker fuel combustion has been carried out by the authors. Some results including the fundamental study of water injection are introduced.
