Reducing the total cost of the lube oil whilst maintaining, or preferably improving, the technical performance delivered by that oil is a key concern for ship operators today. By applying the emulsion expertise developed by Lubrizol for the commercialised PuriNO(x) diesel fuel technology, the authors have been able to develop a stable, high performance emulsion lubricant for 2 stroke engines, with attractive economics. Modern emulsifiers and emulsification blending and testing equipment have enabled to make an emulsion lubricant with long term stability at sub zero, ambient, and elevated temperatures. Delivery of the base is dependent on emulsification technology rather than the relatively expensive colloidal detergent technology currently used. Because the detergent is no longer needed to disperse the base, it is possible to optimise the additive package using detergents which, although highly effective for cleanliness, are not normally suitable for MDCLs due to poor base delivery characteristics. Similarly the range of anti-wear chemistry available is enhanced due to use of emulsification. Therefore the engine cleanliness and wear control characteristics of the emulsion lubricant can be made comparable to the best MDCLs available in the market today. Using a variety of bench tests, including deposit tests and Cameron-Plint wear testing the authors demonstrate the outstanding performance of the emulsion lubricant. It is showed how the emulsion lubricant performs in marine 2 stroke engines, in the areas of acid neutralisation and corrosive wear control, and deposit control. The development of a stable, high performance emulsion lubricant for use in 2 stroke engines is a major step forward in crosshead engine lubrication. It offers the chance to use a high performance lubricant designed for modern engines, without having to pay the premium price normally associated with such oils.
