Medium and large sized diesel engines have two economic advantages: high efficiency and the ability to use cheap fuels, the latter being made possible by the use of bunker fuel oil (BFO). Lately some marine engines were damaged as the combustion control of some bunker fuel was very difficult. For example, abnormally heavy wear of cylinder liners were caused for low speed 2-stroke engines by using a kind of low-grade fuel supplied at certain ports. As it is also very difficult to find such 'troublemaking bunker fuel' according to the normal data of fuel properties, so a way to detect these before use should be developed. The authors have already examined the combustion characteristics of a few bunker fuels sampled directly from the damaged container carriers. Further research work of the last two years is presented in this paper, i.e. more than ten bunker fuels including six troublemaking fuels have been sampled from various ships and checked by the following test methods: - Analysis of the fuel properties including the nitrogen concentration. - Examination of the ignition characteristics using a FIA (Fuel Ignition Analyzer). - High speed visualization of the single spray/flame using a visual combustion chamber. - Hot tube test (HTT) for the cylinder lubricating oil in which a small amount of bunker fuel is mixed to check the occurrence of coking. - Scuffing test with a special test rig feeding the cylinder lubricating oil in which a small amount of bunker fuel is mixed The following results were derived from above mentioned tests: - Trouble-making fuel could not be detected according to only CCAI value. - The combination of low sulfur and high nitrogen content was found in the property data of the trouble-making fuels. - All of the trouble-making fuels showed longer ignition delay than the most of non-trouble fuel. - Trouble-making fuels showed always longer after-burning than the non-trouble ones in the visual combustion chamber. - It was found by HTT that the detergency of cylinder lubricating oil became less in case that a small amount of trouble-making fuel was added to it. Coking phenomena was seen at a lower temperature than the case that the same amount of non-trouble fuel was added. - Scuffing test with a special test rig clearly showed the higher possibility of scuffing when the trouble-making fuel was mixed to the cylinder lubricating oil. Among these methods the most convenient way to detect the trouble-making bunker fuel before use will be proposed.
