Lacquer formation on cylinder liners and consequential high and unacceptable rates of oil consumption are a continuing problem for a proportion of highly rated medium speed diesel engines. This paper lists the general causes of high oil consumption in medium-speed engines and reviews available experience with the specific problem of liner lacquering and consequential high oil consumption in distillate fuelled, medium speed engines. It is shown that cylinder liner lacquering occurs in particular applications, usually marine, where engine design, engine operation, fuel and lubricant factors can combine to give a severe situation. The only 100% reliable way to return a lacquered liner to its original condition is to re-hone, though cleaning lacquer off with an acid such as acetic acid can sometimes work. Surface roughness measurement of the liner surface is a key technique to determine whether liner lacquering has actually occurred since visual examination in field conditions can be subjective. An additional factor, engine maintenance, can also affect the chances of liner lacquering occurring. Research into the causes of liner lacquering has resulted in the development of a research engine procedure that can simulate liner lacquering in the field. This engine was used to benchmark different commercial oils and develop an anti-lacquer lubricant. Based on all test results two formulations were selected for field testing in two ships over 3 years. The field tests showed that the anti-lacquer formulations prevented liner lacquering and the engines experienced normal and stable oil consumption throughout the tests.
