With respect to the forthcoming entry into force of Annex VI to the MARPOL 73/78 Convention, this paper is addressed to engine manufacturers and ship owners/ship operators as well in order to shed light on the complex issue of the applicable air pollution prevention regulations and to give a guidance on how to proceed to achieve required certificates in due time. After entry into force, an International Air Pollution Prevention certificate (IAPP) shall be issued for any ship of 400 gross tonnage and above and other marine applications specified, irrespective the vessel's age. Ships constructed before the entry into force date shall be provided with an IAPP certificate no later than the first scheduled dry-docking after entry into force, but in no case later than three years after that date. The essential regulations of MARPOL Annex VI are specified in brief also reflecting provided survey regimes. For vessels constructed since 1 January, 2000, the vessel's certificate is essentially based on the NO(x) emission certificates to be issued for each diesel engine on board which has a power output of more than 130 kW (Engine international Air Pollution Prevention certificate - EIAPP). The Maritime Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of IMO has encouraged all parties involved to apply the requirements already prior the date of entry into force. The paper reflects on present experience in the engine certification process, especially influenced by the prerequisites for the approval of engine families and engine groups, and engine emission test procedures are described. After installation on board engines are subject to recurrent surveys in order to verify that they still remain in compliance with the applicable NO(x) limit values. Experience with the application of different on-board verification procedures is commented in order to underline the necessity of practicable means and descriptions to be prepared by the engine manufacturer.
