The new SAA6D140 15.24 litre diesel engine has entered into production since the year 2000. It has a high pressure common rail injection system, which has trailed into off road construction machinery field for the first time. This engine has special design features such as robust fuel filtering system against contaminated fuel even in the off road severe circumstances. This paper demonstrates major component design concept. As for cylinder head and cylinder block design, the engine obtained higher rigidity in comparison with its former model. Especially the cylinder head design has been totally restructured as integrated rocker housing concept, which suits perfectly for common rail injector mounting in the centre of combustion bowl. The engine has ductile iron casting pistons, which promise high durability, low oil consumption and good fuel economy. Heat transfer equalization has been improved by twin jets instead of current single nozzle. The electronically controlled high pressure common rail system combined with re-entrant combustion bowl FCD piston has good fuel economy. Lower noise was obtained. Consequently one of the best fuel economy, lowest noise engines has been developed, which meets Tier 2 EPA emission regulation.
