This paper reviews a project set up immediately following presentations at the 1998 CIMAC Copenhagen Congress which reported scuffing and sudden wear incidents experienced by major engine builders. The three mentioned companies agreed to make use of the well proven Oil Film Thickness (OFT) monitoring technology for use in a joint project to explore and study the phenomenon of scuffing in a highly rated 12K90MC Mk VI engine. During the course of the project, various engineering solutions were developed by the industry and introduced, which made scuffing a less pressing issue. Hence the project expanded from simply studying scuffing, to explore other cylinder lubrication issues. The engine is installed in a large container vessel operating between Europe and the West Coast of USA. Two cylinders have been fully instrumented for OFT and cylinder liner surface temperature measurements for a duration of 2 year. The paper shares the quite unique findings of the single, scuffing incident experienced during the test period and compares with the normal behaviour of the piston rings observed under similar engine load conditions. The quality and stability of the oil film of the cylinder liners are further studied under different engine operating conditions. Tests of special nature such as tests of three differently designed engine lubrication systems, tests of different feed-rates, tests of different lubricant viscosities have been performed and are reported and discussed. In particular an interesting estimate of the lowest safe dosage required to maintain a stable ring condition is presented. The results are to some extent related to standard liner wear measurements and analysis of scavenging drain oil. When possible the findings are compared to previously published trends of OFT measurements in 2-stroke engines.
