The insensitive high explosive KS22a for hard target defeat applications was live pre-shocked and later investigated. The results of this study were presented at the 33rd ICT Symposium in 2002. This study was continued with additional quasi-static and shock loaded KS22a samples. At first, KS22a samples were quasi-static pressed with a 200 ton press to 1 kbar and 4 kbar,, respectively, and afterwards, TOW Gap- Tests were carried out. Comparable to the pre-shocked (about 1 kbar) samples, the results of these tests showed also a shift to lower values of the initiation threshold. TOW developed an apparatus, which allows pre-shock Gap-Test samples to dynamic pressure amplitudes up to about 7 kbar. With this apparatus, other samples were pre-shocked to dynamic shock pressure amplitudes of 4 to 6 kbar. Gap-Tests were also carried out with these specimens. Besides these Gap-Test investigations, all mentioned quasi-static and shock loaded samples were analyzed with X-ray diffraction, X-ray refraction and SEM with the objective to permit localization of changes in the high explosive charge structure. Heat conductivity measurements were also carried out to study if the porosity had increased.
