The paper briefly reviews the development of burn resistant titanium alloys which are currently attracting the attention of aero-engine manufacturers for their potential use in applications such as high pressure compressor parts. Experimental work is subsequently detailed on Ti-25V-15Cr-2Al-0.2C wt%. Workpiece surface topography (Ra,Rt, skewness (Rsk) and kurtosis (Rku)) and integrity (microstructure, microhardness and residual stress) are detailed after high speed ball end milling, creep feed grinding, reciprocating surface grinding and shot peening. The presence of numerous titanium carbides in the material contributed to significant workpiece surface damage following both grinding and milling. Workpiece smearing, fractured carbides and carbide pullout was seen on all machined surfaces. Despite such damage, microstructure and microhardness analysis suggested no major change in the burn resistant alloy with any of the machining processes, however shot peening increased the surface/subsurface microhardness from ~355 HK(0.025) to ~435 HK(0.025).
