A new method to clean clogged chips from Al2O3 grinding wheel surfaces using Nd:YAG laser is presented in this paper. The wheel laser cleaning method was studied with both stationary and rotating wheels. Experiments showed that laser cleaning is possible providing appropriate parameters were selected. Laser energy, pulse length and focus offset are the most important parameters. High power flux and short irradiation pulses prevent wheel overheating. Fusion and evaporation of clogged chips play an important role in the laser cleaning process. Tests of laser cleaning on Al2O3 rotating wheels demonstrated that the laser cleaning effect depended not only on discussed laser parameters but also on the heat accumulation in the wheel during the laser cleaning. A suitable irradiation interval could avoid the heat accumulation. The high speed of the rotating wheel could throw melted chips away from the wheel surface.
