Comparison of rough centreless grinding and fine turning has shown similar properties of generated surface. It should be however considered that centreless grinding is much more productive (due to high cutting speed and feed rate) than fine turning, thus it is almost always used for high production grinding. This is especially important in mass production, which is usually associated with automotive industry and manufacturing of electro-motors. Costs of machining were estimated for rough centreless grinding and fine turning. Partial cost factors are in general higher in grinding, due to high costs of grinders, tools, dressing tools, etc. However the experimental runs proved that centreless grinding is to some extent cheaper than fine turning, which is characterised by small productivity. Further possibility for turning precision machining is increased usage of modified fine turning, which enables high feed rates at minor depths of cut, which are typical for centerless grinding. The aforementioned procedure has its limitations in varieties of machined materials. The procedure is convenient for hard machining, however we are trying to modify tool/cutting parameters, which would also enable machining of non-hardened and stainless steels. The results of this experimental research and further possibilities of alternative precision procedures will be presented at the conference. Proposed process monitoring techniques are necessary to achieve reliable and flexible monitoring system, which is a key issue for establishing a reliable precision machining process. For succeeding in this development, the in-process measurements are applied.
