The reduction of noise emission of engines brought other sound sources in the focus. Flow-induced noise, generated by steering valves of power steering systems are one of them. This paper deals with numerical and experimental investigations on a rotary steering valve, which were made in order to reduce the valve noise. The first step therefore was to find out about the main causes of the noise. Based on this perception several noise reducing features ware worked out and verified. The aim of the workings is to develop a prototype of a low noise valve. The shown theoretical, numerical and experimental investigations on the noise behaviour of the steering valve lead to the following results: -causes of the flow induced noise are structure excitation due to vortexes in the valve's chambers and cavitation effects behind the valve's edges; there is a dependence of the noise behaviour to the turning direction of the rotor; -at clockwise rotation of the rotor appears a whistling noise, that occurs at the 'sharp' valve edges; -the whistling noise does not appear, when the 'rough' edges are active; -CFD-calculation suggest that the smaller stator chambers are more critical for noise generation than the larger rotor chambers; -theoretical estimations suggest that cavitation conditions start at phi = +- 10 degree. The examinations show that the appearance of flow-borne noise depends on geometrical conditions as well as hydraulic conditions in the valve. Based on the findings arise a number of possibilities to reduce flow induced noise in the steering valve. Noise reducing measures, sorted by the location of application are shown.
