DuPont Performance Coatings (DPC) is the world's first paint manfacturer to have introduced a waterborne basecoat system for the atomotive industry that dries juat as quickly as conventional solvent-borne basecoat. This explains why the company's newly developed LCCC system can easily be integrated into conventional paint lines. The waterborne basecoat is allowed to flash off in an intermediate flash-off zone made up of three areas. The first stage involves infrared drying for one or two minutes at 60 deg C. Then, the car body advances to the hot-air zone with up to 80 degrees for five minutes and is finally cooled to 30 degrees for three minutes in the third stage. Alternatively, waterborne basecoats can also be flashed off with dehydrated air at a temperature between 35 and 40 deg C and a dwell time between five and seven minutes. The car body is not heated to more than 30 deg C, thus eliminating the need for an additional cooling zone before applying the clearcoat. The greater tolerance as regards the ambient conditions for basecoat application is another advantage of the new concept.
