Fatigue contributes to the poor judgments that lead to accidents while driving. From a safety perspective, there would be an obvious benefit of knowing the behavioral and physiological antecedents of fatigue. Psychophysiological techniques may provide a continuous and objective index of driver state. The blood pressure variability (BPV) has been recognized as a means to assess the state of autonomic nervous activity. The monitoring of blood pressure variability might provide a sensitive index of driver mental fatigue. In this study an automotive driving simulator was used to simulate driver mental stress and workload. BPV variables including total power (TP), low-frequency power (LF), high-frequency power (HF) and LF/HF, together with test performance and subjective evaluation were used to assess the drivers' mental stress and fatigue. Combined with subjective evaluation the findings represent a possible utility of BPV spectral analysis including LF, HF and LF/HF in quantitatively evaluating driver mental fatigue.
