The dynamics of an aeroelastic system composed of a panel forced by unsteady buffeting aerodynamic loads and undergoing limit-cycle oscillations and chaos has been investigated using an aeroelastic model including structural nonlinearities. The supersonic flow is modeled using a linear piston theory, i.e., as a series of container-like fluid slabs, contained between vertical planes perpendicular to the panel. The panel acts like a piston moving the fluid and generates compression and expansion waves inside the container. The panel is modeled using nonlinear plate theory based on the von Karman strain-displacement relation for large panel deflections. A finite-difference method has been used to simulate the aeroelastic system dynamics, and coherent structures of panel dynamics have been identified using proper orthogonal decomposition. The upstream endpoint of the panel has been considered supported by a spring of variable stiffness. Changes of 15% in the stiffness of this spring could be detected from the relative distributions of points in the Poincare plots of the dominant coherent structures. The sensitivity obtained in the current approach is approximately 4-5 orders of magnitude higher than linear methods.
