This paper will describe photometric properties of side emitting LED devices with specific application examples relative to exterior automotive lighting. A brief overview of the light source will be presented highlighting its unique radiation pattern and physical properties. A description of the work completed to accurately characterize the radiation pattern of a specific side emitting LED will be outlined. Detailed optical systems utilizing the side emitting LED's radiation pattern to build exterior lighting functions will be presented including photometric performance data. In conclusion the side emitting LED has a unique and useful off-axis photometric emission pattern. Comparing calculations of theoretical system efficiencies and ray tracing simulation results demonstrated that the side emitting LED has several desirable qualities useful in exterior automotive lighting applications. The side emitting LED's emission pattern can easily be utilized in a direct-view reflector optic system to fully light the reflector, and to intercept a majority of the emitted light. Indirect-view reflector systems can be designed that provide flexibility in shape, size, and styling of the lit optic surface area. Total Internal Reflection (TIR) collection systems can be designed with the side emitting source that are much more compact than systems designed around a Lambertian emitter. Finally, the side emitting device allows significant flexibility in light pipe designs because of its high total luminous flux output and unique emission pattern. To fully realize the above benefits a complete and accurate source characterization is critical. As an optical system is optimized the more an accurate source characterization becomes necessary. Minute details in the source's physical properties become apparent.
