Bitumen has been used for the protection of steel pipelines for many years and since 1978 most off-shore steel pipelines constructed in the North Sea have been protected by bitumen enamel. Higher pipeline operating temperatures and the necessity to work in wilder (colder or hotter) environments has placed increasing demands on the pipeline coating. The improvement in the performance of bitumen enamel by the addition of polymers has created a new generation of bituminous enamel pipeline coatings that provide an alternative to the well-established, high performance systems, such as three-layer polyethylene and fusion bonded epoxy. The paper describes the underlying technology of modified bitumen pipeline coatings, demonstrates improvements in performance, from both laboratory and field experience, and makes a comparison with the three-layer polyethylene system. Some examples are given of commercial pipelines that have been coated with modified bitumen enamel in Iran and Africa. The success of modified bitumen pipeline coatings is due to their ease of application, enhanced performance, simple maintenance and repair procedures and economy.
