A new mathematical method for analysing luminance distributions is presented in the paper. With the aid of this method, a dimension figure for different areas of the beam pattern can be calculated which provides information about the quality of homogeneity. A comparison of the dimension figures obtained using the mathematical method with the subjective evaluations of the test subjects shows a high degree of correlation, particularly in the forward area of the beam pattern. The combination of calculated dimension figures for individual fields makes it possible to forecast the overall evaluation. Using the results obtained in this way, conclusions can be drawn about the subjective impression of homogeneity to be expected from a new headlamp system without having to carry out any more test surveys. The basis for this is the recording of luminance distributions in real road traffic scenarios. In addition, the application of the mathematical model to simulated illuminance distributions has already taken place, thus allowing a forecast to be made about the homogeneity of a headlamp beam pattern without even a prototype of the headlamp needing to exist. The results of this study are to be published shortly. Basic changes to technical headlamp solutions can only be realised within the context of international regulations or new international agreements. The description of homogeneity detailed here using photometric data and physiopsychological investigations can be used as a basis for discussion of the extent to which it would be meaningful to include homogeneity reference figures in legislation.
