Pantographs of modern high speed electrified trains use carbon collector strips to minimise the wear of the overhead wire. However, carbon is susceptible to crack damage due to large impacts from the overhead line, which may result in a total breakdown. In this paper, a microcontroller based pantograph condition monitoring system is proposed to sense any crack damages to the carbon material and provide a protection to the overhead line equipment. An optical fibre technique is used in the developed system to sense the crack and wear damage of carbon material. It also provides an efficient way to isolate the monitoring system from the high voltage of the overhead line (25kV). Optical fibres are embedded into the carbon material of the collector strips. A light signal emitted from the LED source is transmitted through the optical fibres and received by the detector. By monitoring these light signals, the operational conditions of the pantograph are known. A GPS (Global Positioning System) is interfaced to the system to pin point the exact location where the crack damage is developed. An IBM-PC is used to display graphically all the system conditions on the screen and also store the important data into a file. The system not only provides an efficient way to protect overhead line equipment, but also can be used as an instrument for the detailed investigation of carbon material performance.
