Environmental effects on materials used for boiler pipes in a reforming plant, shell of the hydrocracking reactor, transport pipelines and oil tankers were presented. Method for calculating the time of safe exploatation of the installations operated under hydrogen corrosion conditions were developed. Formerly, the fracture mechanics method was used to define the influence of absorbed hydrogen on strength of tested steels. The effective fatigue strength point (taking into account the crack closure) can be used to quantify the level of degradation of the material strength. To define the lifetime of the materials, the critical role of the parameter was shown. Below that point, the steel displayed propensity to brittle cracking resulted by hydrogen effect on the effective fatigue strength point and the further exploitation became dangerous. The sediment water was found to be one of the factors contributing to degradation of tank and pipe materials. The water decreased also corrosion resistance of construction steels and increased tendency to their brittle cracking.
