Two processes for surface treatments of magnesium alloys were developed for the industrial application. MAGPASS-COAT is a chrome-free passivation process. It includes the steps: degreasing, pickling, passivation, drying, sealing or painting. It provides an equivalent alternative to chromate for the automobile industry and others. MAGOXID-COAT is a plasma chemical process. The produced oxide ceramic layers not only provide protection against wear and corrosion but also fulfil requirement regarding hardness, uniform layer deposition, fatigue strength or thermal load capacities. Sealed layers withstand approx. 600 hours in the neutral salt spray test. The MAGOXID-COAT is suitable for many industrial applications of magnesium substrates.
