Alive is a unique autonomous underwater vehicle for performing light interventions. The objective of the recent offshore trials was for Alive to dock on a subsea structure (ROV-panel) autonomously and carry out preprogrammed operations, such as opening and closing valves with its hydraulic manipulation arm. Alive was said to have fulfilled its promise completely. Target approach, docking on the subsea structure and manipulation were controlled via sophisticated on-board video and sonar image-processing, matched with a CAD image of the environment. Three dives were carried out, which validated the functionalities of each sub-system. The robot proved its reliability in coping with difficult sea conditions.
