In July 2002, the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) Lab at MIT Sea Grant, in cooperation with Pisa University, Italy, joined the Tuscan Archaeology Department for an expedition in the Mediterranean Sea aboard Italian naval research vesels. The goals of the expedition were to find new underwater archeological sites, and to test the performance of an AUV as a sensor platform for archeology. The Italian Navy supplied two vessels for the cruise: the Rossetti, which specializes in torpedo manipulation and the Viareggio, specializing in mine intervention. The University of Pisa used an remotely operated vehicle (ROV) aboard the Viareggio, while the AUV Lab team on the Rossetti operated MIT's new underwater vehicle, an Odyssey III class named Caribou. The GPS intelligent buoy portable tracking system was developed by Advanced Concepts and Systems Architecture and is based on a surface-buoy network that measures the time-of-fight of acoustic signals emitted by an acoustic transmitter mounted on an AUV, ROV or diver.
