This paper illustrates the current results of an ongoing research concerning the development of a model to simulate the operation of complex railway systems. The objective research is to develop a reliable simulator of railways systems coherent with a defined safety logic in order to simulate and evaluate the performance and the safety in any condition of traffic and layout, as well as any possible failure scenario. Main tools and criteria used to develop the model are: i) extended Petri nets; ii) object-oriented logic; iii) flexibility and re-usability. The main output of the model is a complete log file of all the simulation actions. Any number of indicators can be derived from the log file such as: a) global rate of occupation for line and station elements (track circuits, switches, signals, ...); b) traffic representation with occupation diagrams and evidence of critical traffic events. The model has been sucessfully tested first on a simple station, then to a small network including two stations and a line section and finally to Rome Casilina, a railway station of medium complexity (9 tracks and 70 switches). Further steps for the development of the simulator are the optimisation of the model structure, the user interface and the introduction of train properties (length, speed) as parameters for a more realistic modelling of the system.
