This paper explains the development of Military IFF(Identification Friend or Foe) and Civil Secondary Radar for Air Traffic Control, with the emphasis being on the post war period. In this Watson Watt gave an active method of target identification in which friendly aircraft would be fitted with a radio set able to receive the pulse transmissions from air defence radars and transmit in response, on the radar operating frequency. Its advantage is that it could accomodate transponders having relatively unselective pulse pair decoding.
