The diffusion bonding technique applied to green P/M compacts during sintering is considered to be a very cost effective bonding technique for joining ferrous green compacts, as well as highly complicated shaped parts without any machining. In this paper, the principles of sinter diffusion bonding technique will be explained. The sinter diffusion bonding technique is based on the nearly same conditions as diffusion bonding except for the bonded surface. In general diffusion bonding, the parts are placed up and down. However, in the diffusion bonding technique, the bonded part consists of an inner part and an outer part. Two or more green compacts are assembled and sintered under the solid state sintering with no or very small amount of liquid phase. The green compacts show very fine surface roughness, as they are polished by tools during ejection from tools. And at the same time, the dimensional accuracy in the right angle direction to the compacting direction is very fine which is based on the tool dimension. Therefore, it is possible to control the difference between inside diameter of the outer and outside diameter of the inner to be in a very small variation. The pressure which is needed to make both surfaces to be bonded close enough for the diffusion of atoms on the surfaces to each other, is difficult to apply directly. Therefore, the pressure is created by assembling under interference fitting and the difference of the amount of thermal expansion of both green compacts during sintering, which is explained by using the combinations of green compacts consist of Fe-1.5Cu-0.7C and Fe-1.5Cu-1.0C. By choosing the material combinations according to the dilatometric curves and interference fit clearance, many types of ferrous green compacts can be diffusion bonded with both of green compacts and wrought steel parts.
