With a market volume of around 420 millon Euro in 2001 and an average growth rate of at least 15% per year, power MOSFETs are a very large and among all the strongest growth segment of the automotive semiconductor market. The main reasons for this growth are a series of new applications with the following aims: reducing system costs, increasing system efficency, adapting to more stringent emission standards, minimizing fuel consumption. Thus for example an average of 50 MOSFETs are built into a starter generator, for 4-cylinder engine with electronic valve timing (EVT) at least 32 of these components are used. Whereas with auto MOSFETs lower inrush resistances, avalanche robustness and the ability to withstand high temperatures are decisive factors, in other markel segments, such as the computer market (EDP) for example, rapid switching up to one MHz and the low gate loadings necessary for this are the deciding factor for success. In years to come this will result in different development focuses ant thereby in sector-specific MOSFET technologies that will not just be expressed in different voltage classes, EDP up to 30V, automotive above 30 V.
