Polymer multilayer (PML) capacitors offer a significant improvement over conventional thin film capacitor technology by permitting thinner dielectrics than are available as self support films. The performances of PML capacitors offer various different applications especially with high temperature and high current requirements. However, commercialization of the technology has not completed yet. The PML capacitors are produced by a continuous, high speed process within a vacuum chamber. Polymer dielectric and metal electrode layers are are built up to the desired thickness. The use of sub-micron thickness, high temperature, dielectric material allows for improved volumetric efficiency over conventional thin film capacitors and superior performance over a wide range of temperatures. From current road map, samples delivery will start from third quarter of year 2003 and commercial production year 2004 to 2005 time frame. As the development proceeds towards commercialization, more and more test data of PML capacitors will be available. The paper provides an overview of production processes and electrical characteristics of PML capacitors. It is expected that this paper attracts engineers who look for extreme conditions for their applications and discussions start taking place to approach specific requirements.
