More and more functions in automobiles are going to be driven by electrical motors instead of hydraulic systems or belt driven systems. Therefore the demand for electrical power increases. Starter/Generator systems fulfil those demands and realize in addition comfortable start/stop systems. The required motors are synchronous or asynchronous machines which require frequency converters with power semiconductors in a current range trom 150 A ... 500 A. To achieve compact low loss inverter designs, power modules with a switching power density of more than 2 kW/cm2, integrated insulation to heatsink, lowest thermal resistance and lowest stray inductance will be available soon on the market. Those modules fit for the 14 V power net as weil as for the new 42 V power net by implementing different MOSFETS. The reliability of power modules has been improved 10 years ago to fulfil the requirements of traction applications like underground trains or trams where a lifetime of 30 years and load cycles of upto 10 millions are required.
