High-frequency microelectromechanical systems (RF-MEMS) exhibit excellent electrical properties at high RF frequencies as W-band. RF-MEMS subsystems are investigated for beamsteering of automotive radar sensors based on smart antennas. Two beamsteering concepts are investigated: RF-MEMS phase shifters and RF-MEMS power distribution networks feeding a beamforming network such as a Rotman lens. The design of RF-MEMS subsystems starts with the optimization of coplanar waveguides (CPWs) and coplanar passive elements, as bends and T junctions. Thermally decoupled W-band RF-MEMS switches are developed to comply with the stringent temperature compliance requirements of automotive applications. Finally, hermetic packaging, RF feedthrough and flip-chip integration concepts are discussed.
