This paper reports results from testing with a mobile heat pump system. The system was evaluated at ambient temperature conditions ranging from -20 deg C to 0 deg C. Warm-up performance and fuel consumption tests were done for both stabilized conditions and drive cycles. The improvement in warm-up performance compared to the baseline system for the average cabin temperature was 8 deg C higher for the HP, after 10 minutes during a drive cycle test. The test ambient temperature was -10 deg C and the ECE+EUDC standard drive cycle was followed. With the heat pump operational the ''air off'' temperature reaches 30 deg C in 4 minutes as oppose to in 11 minutes without the heat pump. Fuel consumption results during the EUDC drive cycle show an increase in fuel consumption of 62 g after 10 minutes and 102 g after 20 minutes. It is expected that the HP would be used for 10 to 15 minutes during these conditions. One outstanding technical issue, which is not treated in this report, is the danger of flash fogging.
