PTC air heaters can help to reduce and even compensate the significant heat deficit in diesel engines and in the near future also fuel efficient spark-ignition engines. The use of all the advantages of electrical heating systems is dependent on the alternator capacity. But there is currently an increasing demand for electrical power from other loads in the electrical vehicle system. So it depends on bringing the 42 Volt system onto the market to utilize the additional applications like decentralized heating. Yet another item will be an intelligent electrical power management, which regulates the priorities of the electrical load and provides the PTC air heater in certain cases with the needed power. Electronic control units allow linear power control of these systems and help to improve efficiency even further by always using the maximum power from the alternator, protecting the electrical vehicle system from peaks and taking care of an optimized EMC-behavior.
