The use of linear and nonlinear variation and distortion methods enables the designer to generate feasible hull form alternatives by using a parent hull that has satisfactory performance characteristics. Different methods are available with advantages and drawbacks. The selection of the methodology should be based on the design objective, which could be as simple as to change the block coefficient by x% or as complex as to modify the hull form to provide better streamlines for a bilge keel. In the first case, one minus prismatic or Lackenby's method may provide a satisfactory solution, whereas in the second case nonlinear transformations or shape averaging need to be applied. Further work is planned to explore the viability of using an automated procedure that can decide to use the most suitable procedure depending on the design requirements.
