To detect the injected fuel quantities 'on board' of passenger cars at each cylinder, a novel micromachined mass flow sensor on a LTCC (Low Temperature Cofired Ceramic)-substrate is presented for highpressure automotive applications. With the thermal injection rate sensor, fuel quantity measurements are performed at fuel pressures of 25 MPa to 135 MPa, whereas the drive pulses vary between 0.3 ms and 1.5 ms. Important injection parameters, as the injection begin/end and the injection rate, are discussed as a function of fuel pressure and drive pulse width. The sensor characteristics are compared to signals, gained from an injection amount indicator (EMI), which is part of the high-pressure hydraulic test bench. For the present application long-term measurements up to 380 h of bare and a SiC:H passivated thin film micro-heaters in oil atmosphere at atmospheric pressure yield the need and the benefit of a proper coating technology for the hot film anemometers.
